A hotter running plug tends to help burn off the carbon that accumulates on the center porcelin insulator. I heat range higher generally is not a concern. If it is moved up too many heat ranges it can lead to preignition and damage to the piston. Seems like a partially plugged air filter would cause the bike to run richer mostly at higher flow (engine speed) rates. As there is no heated intake air capabilty like we used to use on car/light truck engines the engine has to warm up before it can atomize most of the fuel in the a/f mixture. ALso if ou look back in some of the threads, I believe the Savage has a tendency to ice up the carburetor in cool damp weather. I've not experienced it on the Savage, but had a 54 Mercury in College that would ice the venturi and outside of the carb solid in 33 deg snowy/rainy conditions. Also had a 81 Plymouth Reliant with the 2.2l engine that would ocassionally ice up at 50 MPH. Was ok slower as the intake and exhaust heating system could manage at lower speeds.
